Funny thing, after a while things just get comfortable...don't get me wrong, I love looking and fantasizing...but the idea of going thru all the arguments again to get to know each other just doesn't appeal...I have so much time invested....and not enough left to do it again.

Valencias are great speakers--and with some mods they can be upgraded and made even better!!

Agreed--my wife and I are together for the long haul but looking is always fun. Listening is fun too....

    Nice pair!

Back to the speakers (as much as I enjoyed the vintage cheeks). When you look at the price of a model 19 in good to excellent condition and compare it to what you can buy new, the value becomes obvious. Attending a lot of audio shows, the prices floor me. I'd much rather pay $2K for a nice pair of vintage Altec than the crazy prices for today's "high end" speakers.

+1 That has always been my take on this.Dollar for Dollar, IME Altec Lansings can't be touched for the quality of sound to the dollars that are spent !!

Most of what passes as high end sounds sterile to me...

Yeah, pretty much. Very "Hi-Fi", not much music. There are some nice exceptions, but they are "exceptions".

    I am with you OG...

Being wired for 220 (and possibly 440) there is only one thing I enjoy more than audio equipment and music.

If someone ever makes a speaker that I think sounds better I will buy them and let my Altec's go. Cost will not be an object. I have been trying hard to let them go for over 36 years. It's funny I can remember being attracted to them as a child... Every time I heard something that sounded that great I had to see what it was. I still remember looking at them at theaters, theme parks, and always seeing that "Voice of the Theater" and ALTEC logo.

I understand how they produce sound and everything inside them that does it but I still don't believe it. They still amaze me.

Re: CL Heads Up: Model 19's

Too much tech in Hi-Fi these days.

In the old days stuff had to pass the listening test, these days, if the test gear says it's accurate...it must be...

I don't like auto-exposure cameras either. Never liked letting a machine do my thinking...

Listening with no tech doesn't impress me much...on the net are tons of glowing posts about abominable speakers...

Life is a balance...all the knowledge is no good without good instincts on how and when...OTOH instinct alone only goes so far..
